Planning for Retirement: A Community Conversation

  • Settlement Centre 46G Boundary Road Hamilton, Waikato Region, 3214 New Zealand (map)

Presented by Tony Agar. A collaboration between Hamilton Budgeting and Community Waikato with support from Age Concern, Celebrating Age, Work and Income and Volunteering Waikato.

A workshop for people working or volunteering in the community sector across the Waikato.

New Zealand’s population is ageing, work and caregiving patterns are changing, and fewer people are reaching retirement owning their own home. At the same time, KiwiSaver is maturing and the Retirement Commissioner is calling for cross-party action to strengthen the retirement income system. While these bigger conversations continue, many people are left wondering what practical steps they can take now.

This three-hour workshop is for people working or volunteering in the community sector who want time and space to think about retirement in a supportive, realistic way. Retirement can feel a long way off, or suddenly very close, and this session is designed to help people pause, reflect, and get clearer about what retirement might look like for them.

The workshop will cover:

  • What retirement might look like for you

  • NZ Super, KiwiSaver, and other sources of income

  • How spending and housing needs can change over time

  • Managing debt and financial risk

  • Purpose, wellbeing, and staying connected after work

The session includes group discussion, practical information, and time for personal reflection. You do not need to be close to retirement to attend.

This workshop is delivered in partnership with Community Waikato and HBAT, with a focus on both the financial and personal aspects of retirement, recognising that many people in the community sector continue to contribute long after paid work ends.

Pre-Workshop Reflection

A few weeks before the session, participants will be sent a short reflection to complete at home. This will include:

  • A simple review of their current financial position

  • Thinking about future income and expenses

  • Use of Sorted tools, including the Retirement Planner and KiwiSaver tools

Participants can choose to send their completed reflection to HBAT ahead of time. This will not be used to give individual advice but will help identify common themes and questions to shape the workshop discussion.

Community: $ 20
