Timely Conversations: How we talk about the later years at work

  • Settlement Centre 46G Boundary Road Hamilton, Waikato Region, 3214 New Zealand (map)

Presented by Jenny Magee

A practical half day workshop for community organisation managers and board leaders.

In community organisations, people often stay involved for years, carrying relationships, organisational memory and ways of working that may never have been written down. The work can be a strong part of who they are.

How do you create the conditions for people to talk openly and early about staying, changing and leaving — without assumptions about age, commitment or what should happen next?

You may be wondering …

  • How do we raise the subject without implying retirement is expected?

  • What if someone wants to continue working, but differently?

  • How can people talk honestly about changing energy, priorities or responsibilities?

  • How do we balance individual choices with the organisation’s needs?

  • What knowledge and relationships need to be carried forward when someone leaves?

Too often, later-career work offers only two settings: keep going as you are or leave. There are usually far more possibilities.

What you will gain

This practical and reflective workshop will help you think about four things:

Signal – What does your organisation make easy — and unnecessarily hard — about staying, changing and leaving?

Conversation – What needs to be talked about, by whom and when? How do you open the conversation without creating unnecessary alarm?

Shape  – What could changing contribution look like — different responsibilities, reduced hours, mentoring, project work, governance, volunteering or something else?

Continuity  – What knowledge, relationships and connection need to be carried forward when a role changes or ends?

This workshop is not about pushing people towards retirement

Age should never be treated as evidence that a person is less capable, less committed or ready to leave.

Timely Conversations focuses on voluntary, respectful conversations about the later years at work. Seek professional HR or employment law advice where performance, capability, restructuring or other employment matters are involved.

This workshop is part of the ElderWise suite of later-career programmes.
