Evaluating Progress in NFP's

  • Western Community Centre 46 Hyde Ave Hamilton New Zealand (map)

Presented by Dr Maureen Marra and InLeadership

It has become increasingly important for nonprofit community sector organisations to ‘prove’ to government agencies and other funders the valuable impact of their work. However, evaluating the successful impact that nonprofit organisations have on their community or environment is known to be difficult due to the very nature of the work they do in supporting communities and also because much of this work is done through volunteers. However, standard metrics such as financial KPIs that work in the corporate and business sectors simply do not reflect the work of a community organisations. Thus, there is a need for relevant and effective approaches to evaluating the impact of community organisations that do consume their valuable resources from the critical work of the organisation.

This seminar outlines the current thinking and literature on impact evaluation assessments in the nonprofit sector. The seminar then provides a way forward for participants to implement an impact evaluation that is relevant, do-able, affordable and reflective of the work of the organisation. With a focus on the Mission of the organisation, success is assessed through understanding the organisation and its community as a connected ecosystem.
