Better banking for all

What is CNA working on right now?

Community Networks Aotearoa is a busy little office with multiple projects on the go.  Everything we do is based on issues arising in the non-profit sector, that we as a national organisation can grapple with on behalf of The Sector.

One of the biggest current projects deals with Banking.  Ever tried to change your signatories after your AGM?  That’s just one example of the difficulties NGOs are experiencing.

CNA has realised that most banks are reacting to legislation called the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act.  This Act has recently been reviewed by the Ministry of Justice and CNA had a lot to say to the Ministry about the unintended consequences on non-profit organisations from this law.

Helpful NFP amendments have been suggested to the Act, but we have no idea if the Minister of Justice will pick up those amendments to present to Parliament.

CNA has answered this call (more a groan) with our Banking For All project. We have contracted the amazing Economic Anthropologist Dr. Jane Horan (thanks to funding from JR McKenzie Trust and the Todd Foundation) in order to obtain stats and stories to spearhead change. Govt. love stats!

We have also met several MPs, met with the Banking Ombudsman; The Commerce Commission and The Reserve Bank – to name but a few. Jane will be talking to Banks, to Tier 1 NGOs and also to some of our own local community organisations about all of this.

What can you do?  This is very important!  Add your voice to the growing chorus!

We are asking you to take a few minutes to tell us about your experiences with banking.  We know everyone is over surveyed, but it’s the only way we can get information.  With stats and stories we hope to ease your burden!
