“Mou i te ko, mou i te ere, kia pukuru ou vaevae, kia mokora ou kaki- hold firm on to your spear and shield, set a strong foundation and keep your head held high”- This ancient proverb from my homeland of the Cook Islands speaks of a warrior who must be grounded and armed with the right tools to protect their community, and this proverb has firmly guided me throughout my life.
Born and raised in the heart of the South Waikato, Tokoroa, aged 25 years old and currently the General Manager of the South Waikato YMCA. To date I am the youngest Head of Operations for any YMCA across New Zealand.
Working for the community has always been my passion and my involvement in the community stems from my great grandparents, grand parents and parents who have all contributed greatly to their various communities, whether that be in New Zealand or the Cook Islands.
My role at the YMCA has enabled me to work on creating a truly youth and child focused environment for the rangatahi and tamariki of our community.
I am also actively involved in other community groups which has a focus on strengthening the connections and relationships between people and their cultural heritage, engagement with the community and raising awareness of the services in our district.
Passion and Commitment are my spear and shield, and Community, Culture and Family are the foundations which keep me firmly grounded.
