Gary Thompson, Te Kaiwhakarite
Gary Thompson is of Ngāti Paoa, Ngāti Hauā descent. Gary joined Community Waikato in September 2014. He established a Māori Development programme of capability and capacity building for Māori entities in the Waikato Tainui region. He works with Marae trustees and their committees, Ahu Whenua Trusts and their governance entities, with papakāinga initiatives and on whānau based development initiatives.
Gary has over 14 years of experience directing and managing Māori Health Gains projects for the Northern and Midland DHB and for Waitemata DHB. He has many years of experience in Māori Community Development, governance, strategic planning, project management and relationship building. Gary is currently supporting marae to develop Marae Development Plans funded by Te Puni Kokiri, (TPK) the Department for Māori Development and the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA). These plans are a prerequisite to the Oranga Marae fund for Major works on the marae.
Gary has been involved in Iwi Governance for more than 13 years. He is the Chair of the Ngāti Paoa Iwi Trust (PSGE) working to conclude Treaty Settlements in Hauraki and Tamaki-makaurau in 2019.
Gary completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Māori Development in 2009 and a Master of Management from the University of Auckland in 2011.
